University

On the 16th of August I received my results as to whether or not I would get into university, too my surprise I got in! I was over the moon as I wasn’t expecting it at all. Preparations were made and by preparations I mean spending money on new cutlery, cups, plates, duvet, waste bins and most importantly alcohol for freshers week. Like many other people leaving home for the first time I was a bit teary and emotional but that soon disappeared when I unpacked and met my flat mates. My advice to anyone applying to go to university, use social networking sites like Facebook to find people on your course and in your flat and get to know them before you start, that way you can break the ice beforehand, and it won’t be as awkward! My first week at university was a blur, as to be expected. I found that joining in with freshers and attending most events really helped you boost your confidence with university and your fellow students. Obviously don’t overdo it like I did, I got freshers flue during the second week and had to slow things down a bit. My body was feeling so run down and I could nearly hear my liver screaming at me. Still nights in relaxing with friends always turned out fun! Surprisingly I made it to every lecture and workshop even the 9’oclock starts with only 3 hours sleep, that my friend is dedication. I’ve been at uni for three weeks now and I already feel like I’ve been there for three years. Another bit of advice is to join societies, even if you don’t anything about cheerleading or what the Irish society actually is, just join them and give it a go. My uni offers a free two week trial to see if you enjoy it or not. On the day of picking which societies you could sign up for I hadn’t a clue. When I was younger I was always busy playing tennis or in the guides or dancing but as I’ve got older, I’ve found myself to become a bit of a bore, so I was determined to join a few. In the end I signed up for pole dancing lessons, how to DJ, the Irish society (You don’t have to be Irish to join), o2 academy, scuba diving, surfing and dancing. As you can tell I’m determined to lose some weight as well. Some will say that the introduction week at uni is pointless and for some it maybe but despite having hangovers for most of that week I made it on time every day and actually found that the welcome week is really important. It gives you a chance to meet your tutors and other people in your course and gives you a lot of information on modules, facility’s and the university itself. For me that boost my confidence. A friend said she hadn’t met anyone in her course as she hadn’t attended in the first week on university and she regrets it now but each to their own. In this blog I’ve given advice on settling in etc but for many of you going to university and leaving a girlfriend or boyfriend behind can be heart breaking and worrying. I myself am going through this experience with my boyfriend. What’s really important and obvious is using Skype. It costs nothing and is a great way of keeping in touch with people. I have arranged to see my boyfriend every two weeks although sometimes it may be a longer gap, but it’s a start. Communicating on how each other are handling the separation and not bottling up your feelings is key! And when you do see each other, make sure you don’t just stay inside all the time.

The Help

Sorry I havn't posted a blog recently been so busy. Today has been a very slow and painful day due to my large concumption of alcohol last night nonetheless I decided I wanted to write a film review in my blog and I started to watch Tate Taylor's The Help. It was orignally a novel by Kathryn Stockett in 2009 but adapted into a motion picture in 2011. The film is an American drama with comedy interlinked. What I look for in a film is not just the comedy aspect or getting cheap thrills for the horror films but learning about history, whether it be something from Saving Private Ryan or Blood diamand, where you can get an insight into the way life was for people in different countries and in different circumstances. Don't get me wrong I enjoy the comedy and the cheap thrills but films such as The Help I think help inspire people. The film is set in Jackson Mississippi in the early 60s when the seperation between races was at its peak (Civil Rights era). Skeeter (Emma Stone) a young, white budding journalist such as myself begins writing a book from the black maids point of view (also referred too as "The Help"). Such book reveals the harsh racism they faced on a daily basis and other stories revolving the lives they had to give up as a result of poverty and subordination. But the making of this book must be kept under wraps as the maids could face unthinkable punishment as would Skeeter.  I won't tell you too much about the film as I wouldn't want to spoil it for you but I promise you its worth a watch and its a definite tear jerker! Emma Stone (Crazy Stupid Love, Spider-man, Superbad) is seen predominantly in light hearted films and so when it came to acting in a film that was based around such a difficult and touchy subject i bet she was nervous! I adore Emma Stone and her work but even I had doubts as to whether or not she could pull this off. But to my surprise I think she did a fantastic job and the film won countless awards and was praised by the film critics. So next time your stuck on what to watch on an evening try "The Help" you wont be disappointed. Helped my hangover after all :) xox

Feeling hungover but not hungover

After spending a week in the party island that is Ibiza, where instead of water I drank vodka and tequila and instead of sleeping I was dancing till the early hours of the morning which is to be expected of a girls holiday. There were arguments, there were loss of toe nails (me to be precise) and people's dignity shot out the window. Which is all well and good when you're out there but coming home and back to the normality was so strange. I wasnt going to sleep drunk and waking up hungover, there wasn't a linguring smell of sick from my fellow partier in the room. Everything was so...normal. And now I find myself unable to consume alcohol without feeling ill and I find myself knackered even though I havn't done anything strenuous. This is in fact the recovery stage which I always used to get from doing Leeds festival for two years, so you'd think I'd be used to it but obviously this is not the case. I had decided that this summer I would try something new, something different so I bought a ticket for creamfields. Three days of mayhem in a place I've never been before, a step up from leeds fest in my eyes. I'll be writing a blog all about my festival experiances and what are the dos and don'ts and giving you an insight into my holiday in Ibiza.

Hello (:

Probably should of done this before I started my first post but oh well, better late than never.
If you havn't realised my name is Ellie I live in North Yorkshire, to be more precise I live near Harrogate and to be even more precises I live in the sticks known as the Yorkshire Dales. I'm still undecided about whether I like living in the middle of no where or if i'd prefer to live in a city. I've finished my last year at High School and hopefully moving on to University to study magazine journalism so maybe then I'll be able decide. I started this blog to get more experiance of writing which alot of budding journalists are doing nowadays, so I'm jumping on the bandwagon. I wanted to write about fashion and beauty but decided not to narrow myself and instead, write about generally anything that interests me. As you can see i'm already good at babbling on about pointless things so I have a inkling these posts will be quite long..

Fashion can bring Elegance, Individualism and Confidence. Trends express no personality or imagination in my eyes.

Live Laugh Love.

Unmistakably corny title yes but I think round this time of year, people my age (18 years,) forget to do this as the stress of exam results and university offers dawns on all of our minds. Although some take their minds of it with a group holiday to party places and others spend the weekends at festivals, still in the back of their minds the same thoughts still churn. It's easier said than done to "not think about it" as many parents would say or "there is nothing more you can do" which has to be my parent's favourite line. This blog is not going to offer you advice with how to deal with this stress as everyone deals with things differently, but what I will say is this. Everyone is in the same boat, everyone needs specific grades to get into their first choice university so don't think you're alone on that one. Summer 2012 is your summer so don't spend it fretting, get on with things, do what makes you happy because this will be the summer to remember for the rest of your life. This summer will be the end of your high school days and the beginning of the rest of your life. And whatever happens on Auguast 16th, things will have a way of working themselves out. Until then, Live this summer to the full. Laugh until your stomach hurts and Love the people who make this time unforgettable.
Comment and let me know what your plans are and what you've been up too this summer!!
